Retired Cody High School teacer Dan White is speaking. He says, """"It's sad that we are here, but it's a double edged sword??? He goes on to say that he taught 30 years in science at Cody High School. Many people have a misunderstanding of what science really is. Scientific method is taught to hundreds of millions of students all over the world. It's a process, not an accumulation of facts, or worse yet, opinions. Scientific method is the basis and has produced nearly all of the conveniences of modern life: air travel, space travel, safe surgeries, medicine, computers, cell phones, mineral and oil extraction, agriculture. All of that has come from the process that we call the scientific method. It has allowed us to face the challenges of life. He says the steps of the method: Clearly identify the problem, carefully controlled experiments, gathering data, hypothesis, and debate. This has allowed us to understand the universe in ways we were never able to in 99% of human history. He says science has peer review, debate that is not done by politicians, the military, or the clergy. It's done by experts in the field. Eventually it comes to a consensus, and then it has to be repeatable. He says its called research...you search, and search again. If it can't be repeated, it's not science. In the end the scientific process draws the best conclusions from the information that we have. It doesn't mean that it is always true. This is the best explanation that we have. He says when I was in college Neanderthals were our strange Europeon ancestors. White says we now know they're not our ancestors, they're our cousins. Our ancestors are another group of people that came before that.
