Interview: Vering says her business is much better than last year. She says the park is getting the message out about carrying bear spray, and people are responding. She says people thought they were a gimmick in 2015, the year they opened the business. She says this year people understand bear spray before they come to the kiosk. She says they have tour groups that come through and the tour guide brings them to the kiosk. She say the park's message is extremely helpful in getting the message out. She says one third of her customers would not have bought bear spray, and 5% would not have hiked. She says a one day rental is less than $10. She says they hope to have more locations where people can rent and return. She says people can return at seven locations in the park. She says quite a few customers convert to sales, and keep the can (charged more on their credit card.) She says when people have bear encounters, it grows her bear spray rental business. Vering says they had an immediate spike in rentals following the 2015 deadly attack on a hiker in the park. She says UDAP founder Mark Methany encourages bear spray rentals.
